Hallam FM -
Hallam Fm is a subsidiary company of UK media conglomerate Bauer media. Hallam Fm is a magazine talk show for people living within South Yorkshire and serves as one of the most popular in this location with around 340,000 listeners per week. Hallam itself is owned by Bauer radio limited and a part of planet radio - the hub for all radio stations that are subsidiary to conglomerate Bauer. Several locations around the Uk have similar stations to Hallam such as West Fm and Clyde FM.
According to the latest RAJAR report , Hallam FM have now reached 340,000 listeners per week with an average listening time of around 8.1 hours per listener/week. This is a 16% rise on the figures from the previous year showing more listeners are tuning in every day, combined this is coverage of around 1,314,000 listeners aged over 15 each week within the catchment area for the show (South Yorkshire) . Not only has this happened for Hallam FM but a variety of other shows across the Bauer network showing a significant growth across the major cities in the UK.
Hallam FM is a commercial radio station which depends on sponsorship and advertisements to sustain itself , these advertisements are reflective of your typical Hallam listener and mainly focus around the following topics; education , saving money , financing options , local shopping complexes and fast-food. Hallam reportedly only has a 37% ABC1 demographic making C2DE listeners more common, this means that the subjects related to the advertisements are geared up for those with a lower disposable income therefore will be more interested in where has offers on for certain products or where new cars can be financed at a smaller cost. Big brands such as Mcdonald;'s also advertise on Hallam Fm again as this is more of a budget store, it is the payment from these kind of advertisements which helps Hallam have bigger features in the show such as the 1k minute and other cash giveaways/competitions. This as a result entices listeners to tune in as they are aware of the station being one which gives back to their listeners. Hallam Fm also provide sponsorship for various things such as football stands and have even in the early 2000s provided sponsorship for Sheffield's Arena - now known as the FLYDSA.
Hallam Fm has a majority female listenership with a 54-46% split between the two genders, this is likely due to the high amount of magazine , gossip style content to the show with limited coverage on topics such as sport which may attract more of a masculine audience. The content of the station is aimed towards an 25-45 year old demographic however I believe over the previous year there has been more effort to widen this target audience to late teens what with the kind of music the show is broadcasting and the topics they cover. Particularly on the Big John @ breakfast show , we can see the targeted material for the older target audience as the majority of this is based around relatable topics such as family life , careers and relationships as to where each presenter sets a theme and content related to it , for example Big John often talks about his wife and children and scenarios which the listener may find relatable or humorous. As mentioned before , the show has a majority C2DE listener which is reflected in the running of the show , for example the 1k minute which gives listeners the chance to win one thousand pounds for answering 10 questions correctly - this will be more enticing for someone with a lower spending power.
Hallam Fm aires a variety of content containing the newest hits , news , weather and sport which are all relevant to the area the shows are broadcasted to . In terms of music Hallam generally plays pop music with frequent interjections of RnB , indie and hip hop with thanks to their later shows such as 'floor fillers' and the 'proper tunes' which are played at intervals throughout the day. Although Hallam doesn't play music for the mass audience , there are other stations under the conglomerate Bauer media which take care of this such as Kerrang who play rock, punk and metal music. Hallam covers all areas in South Yorkshire as well as some national news stories during their hourly news breaks however there is more of a stress on Sheffield's news due to that being the location from which the station broadcasts from. Unlike on stations such as BBC 1 , we get sports news relevant to our location too instead of championship football for example we get news on local darby's and matches.
The station can be accessed in a variety of ways owing to technological convergence and black box technologies and also the more traditional methods through tuning in on analogue and DAB radio. Hallam Fm now has its own mobile application which can be accessed on both android and IOS smartphones which allows users to listen along live to the shows using the internet (streaming) or listen on demand to a catalog of podcasts from recent shows which they may have missed. The interactive phase of the internet - Web 2.0 has made it possible for users to interact more freely with online content , the Hallam FM website allows users to log in to an account which gives them suggestions (more like this) and reminders for when their favourite shows are ready to be listened to online.
